Wanda Sykes Didn't Like 'The Help,' Thought It Was Too Happy (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 7th 2011 5:17AM
Wanda Sykes, 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno''The Help' has been getting solid reviews from critics across the nation, and Jay Leno said "it was fantastic." But Wanda Sykes had a very different opinion of the film on 'The Tonight Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC).

"It stunk," she said bluntly.

When pressed for more details, Sykes explained, "They're just way too happy for 1960s Mississippi."

The movie also made her uncomfortable now as a parent, because her babies are white. The film looks at the racism experienced by black maids who work for white families.

"I'm cooking the chicken and I just look at 'em like, 'Look at them white babies'," she said. "They think I'm supposed to be over here frying this chicken."

Reelz Fudged 'Kennedys' Ratings, Snooki Quits Wrestling and More TV News

by Jean Bentley, posted Apr 5th 2011 6:15PM
The KennedysTurns out, the first two hours of 'The Kennedys' miniseries wasn't the record-breaking success Reelz Channel wanted us to think it was.

Although the network reported an audience of 1.9 million, actual Nielsen numbers put the total at 1.3 million. That's 30 percent lower, Vulture points out.

So, what does Reelz have to say about the conflicting reports? A rep told Vulture, "The numbers we reported yesterday were fast national of average viewers per minute when we add our two showings (8PM East and 8PM West) together, which is the gross audience for an average minute."

In other TV news ...

The HBO Films movie about the financial collapse, 'Too Big to Fail,' will debut May 23. It stars William Hurt, Paul Giamatti, Cynthia Nixon, Bill Pullman and more. [HBO]

Although Snooki's unexpected gymnastic prowess surprised the world after her appearance on Wrestlemania, she says she's done with wrestling. "I'm pretty busy with 'Jersey Shore,' so I doubt [I'll continue]," she said. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Breaking news: The Science Channel is changing its name ... to plain old Science. In a press release, the network mentioned it wanted to be "the official home of the Thought Provocateur -- the individual who is constantly asking 'What if?' and 'Why not?'" [THR]

Wanda Sykes Talks Wrestling With Two-Year Olds and Dog Poo on 'The Late Late Show' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 11th 2011 4:03AM
Wanda Sykes, 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson'Wanda Sykes seems to have made a whole new career out of hitting the talk show circuit and talking about the experiences she and her wife are having in raising their twin babies. Almost two now, she talked on 'The Late Late Show' (Weeknights, 12:37AM on CBS) about the dangers of toddlers and dogs.

"I have to run around and pick up the dog poop before the kids pick it up," she said. "I would never want my kid to touch me again if they have dog poop in their hands."

Unfortunately, kids like to do what they see their parents doing, without necessarily understanding it. So when one of her boys saw Sykes cleaning up their dogs' little presents, he didn't register the plastic bag she was using or any of the rest of it.

Wanda Sykes Thinks Her One-Year-Old Daughter Intentionally Got Her Sick for 'Ellen' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 22nd 2010 1:00PM
Wanda Sykes, 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show'Wanda Sykes already knows she's going to have her hands full with her one-and-a-half year old daughter, Olivia. The comedian was on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' (Weekdays, syndicated), but she wouldn't hug DeGeneres when she came out.

Now that she has kids, Sykes is "all the time," and mainly because when Olivia is sick, "she make sure everybody's sick."

Sykes then told the story of how when she was trying to teach Olivia the importance of covering your mouth when coughing, Olivia had a better idea. "She looked at me and she took her little fingers and opened my mouth and put two hot coughs right in my mouth," Sykes explained. "And then closed my mouth ... And I can just feel the hot baby germs just rushing down my throat and attacking my whole system. I was sick for like two weeks after that."

Rick Fox Talks About His 'Dancing With the Stars' MustacheThis week on 'Dancing With the Stars,' Rick Fox danced the tango with partner Cheryl Burke ... while sporting a mustache. Oddly, Fox didn't have a mustache the week before, and he didn't have one the next day. So where did it come from?

On 'The Tonight Show' (11:35PM ET on NBC), Fox explained everything. He also tried on a new fake mustache, one he claimed was made from his chest hair. But before we get to the fake one, what was the deal with the 'DWTS' one?

Wanda Sykes Talks Dr. Laura on 'Larry King Live'Igniting a massive race debate, Dr. Laura Schlessinger recently used the N-word multiple times on-air in her advice to an African-American caller. The radio host quit her show soon after, citing freedom-of-speech issues.

The thing that most surprises Wanda Sykes about the Dr. Laura controversy is that any African Americans were even listening. "That's a white people thing," she said on 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN). "Dr. Laura is not even a psychologist, she's not a psychiatrist ... You make better time getting therapy from your masseuse," joked the comedienne.

'Tonight Show': Wanda Sykes Talks Mel Gibson, Her 'White Babies' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Jul 23rd 2010 6:34AM
Wanda Sykes Talks Mel Gibson on 'Tonight Show'Wanda Sykes said Mel Gibson is "puttin' out tapes like Osama bin Laden." She has a point. During her appearance on 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC), Sykes commented on Gibson's ranting voicemail messages (who hasn't?) and made a few jokes about her "white babies."

Concerning Gibson, Sykes said, "Whoopi Goldberg, she was defending him, saying he's been to her house. But she might want to check her house, see what he left behind there."

"My friends, they can't wait to hear my racist rant when I get drunk ... It's gonna happen," she joked. "Mine will probably have a dash of Alec Baldwin."

"[You] might not know I have white babies," Sykes told the audience, joking about the fraternal twins she has with wife Alex. "Angelina and Madonna -- they got all the black babies, so I just had to take what's left."

Stripping and Hooking on 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted May 5th 2010 9:55PM
Stripping and Hooking on 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'There's a slight case of mistaken identity on 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' (Wed., 8PM ET on CBS). A policeman visits Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to warn her about a prowler in the neighborhood. Since the cop is very good-looking and named "Officer Johnson," Christine comes to the somewhat odd conclusion that he's a male stripper dressed as a cop. Quite naturally, this mistake leads to a few awkward moments.

After clearing up the confusion, Christine attempts to spin the whole "stripper" thing as being a compliment. The policeman takes it all in stride, and zings Christine back. "Thank you," he says in reply. "For the record, you could be a hooker."

'American Idol' - 'Idol Gives Back/1 of 7 Voted Off' Recap

American Idol, Idol Gives Back 2010
It's "Inspiration Week" on 'American Idol,' which means the Idols sang inspirational songs on Tuesday, and 'Idol Gives Back' was on tap for tonight. It's truly amazing how much this charitable endeavor helps people around the globe. It's not easy to see all of the suffering going on in the world -- especially the children -- but it's really easy to pick up the phone and make a small donation that could save a kid's life.

Tonight, celebrities reported on the huge malaria problem in Africa; Save the Children; a food bank in Monrovia, Calif.; and global health, among others. At the end of the show, Simon Cowell reported that $15 million had been raised during the two hours the show aired. That's awesome. For more info and to learn how you can give, check out 'Idol Gives Back.'

'The New Adventures of Old Christine' - 'Somehow, Subway' Recap

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 11th 2010 11:33AM
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'
Ah, the beauty of farcical theatre. The simplest of tasks laid to waste by the outrageous shenanigans and outlandish responses of one brilliant comedian. In this case, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She needed help from no one in the cast to make her extended stay on the subway platform funnier and funnier to watch as the episode progressed.

That's good news because Richard, Matthew and Barb were pretty busy back at Christine's place ... doing stuff. At least the writers bothered to give us a reason that Matthew is still hanging out and eating at Christine's as if he lives there. The catfighting between Richard and Matthew about all their roommate annoyances with one another certainly brought me back to my roommate days. Man, do things get annoying.

Barb's role this week was to spread the message that texting while driving is incredibly dangerous. No matter where you are. I certainly didn't expect her to come flying into the scene when she did.

'The New Adventures of Old Christine' - 'Sweet Charity' Recap

Ed Begley Jr., 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'
As much as I don't want to compare Julia Louis-Dreyfus' new show to her old one, I can't help but notice some similarities with this week's installment. Much of what made 'Seinfeld' work was in the way people outside of that core four reacted to just how deplorable those people really were. When we were in that inner circle with them, it all sort of worked and we didn't really realize how bad they were.

Now, Christine Cambpell is far more obviously a terrible person than Elaine Benes, but as with 'Seinfeld,' we often don't realize just how horrible she is. Even moreso, when put in the context of Christine, Richard and Matthew, Barb often comes across as the only sane and rational one. And yet, when you put these people out and on display in front of so-called normal people, they simply look awful.
