Oscar's rage continues on The Office webisodes - VIDEOS

Ah, office gossip. It's kind of the best. Everybody knows that office jobs are soul-crushing endeavors, so it's imperative that you find something constructive on which to focus. That thing may be your job, but let's face it: it's probably not. Instead, it becomes the lives of those around you. People who, if you had your choice, you would never speak to, much less get involved in their lives, yet you end up spending more time with them than you do your own family.
In the first of The Office's new webisodes, Oscar gave his co-workers the gift of gossip when he was caught screaming at someone on the phone. In fairness, when you're on a cell phone and you're yelling in the middle of a crowded office, you kind of lose your expectation of privacy. Oscar, however, does not see it that way. He refused to explain himself, which naturally makes everyone all the more interested. This week, the investigation into Oscar's freakout continues.
Hey, it's time for The Office webisodes! Wait -- It is? - VIDEO
Just because I write about TV doesn't mean I keep up with every single thing about it. Sometimes, things fall through the cracks--which is why I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my mail the other day and found a DVD with brand new Office webisodes. I'm used to these appearing during the summer, as a way to tide the fans over until the new season starts. However, we're smack dab in the middle of season 5 right now, and we still get four new Oscar-centric webisodes. It's a Thanksgiving miracle! In this series, called "The Outburst," everyone in the office overhears a very angry Oscar yelling at someone over the phone. Of course, his coworkers do what they would do in that office, or in any other office in the world: they spend the rest of the day obsessing over the phone call and trying to find out what it was about.

Heroes creator Kring worries about online content, product placement
And thousands of Heroes fans around the world say "well, duh."Heroes creator Tim Kring admits that there might be a little bit too much going on in the show's universe. At a NATPE LATV Festival panel discussion, Kring says that there might be so much content going online -- and so many employees working on the online content -- that it sort of takes away from the experience of the show and the storyline, especially if you have a creative team working online that really isn't close to the team that works on the TV show. Sounds like he's referring (strongly) to the much-maligned second season of the show.
He also thinks that all of the product placement and corporate sponsorship that the show has doesn't help either.
The Office's Mindy Kaling and Brian Baumgartner talk Office games, webisodes and sexiness
Ah, summertime. The heat, the haze, the traffic, the lack of The Office; what's not to hate? Luckily, the brilliant folks behind The Office have been busy figuring out ways to tide us over until the fall. Starting Thursday, July 10, NBC.com will be airing Office webisodes. For those of you who like your Dunder Mifflin-ites live, Mindy Kaling (Kelly) will be hosting the Office Games in Scranton on Saturday, July 19. Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in a conference call with Mindy Kaling and Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) as they discussed the webisodes, Office Games, friendly competition and the status of a few MIA Dunder Mifflin employees.
Take a sneak peek at The Office webisodes - VIDEOS
July is right around the corner, which means just one thing ... new webisodes of The Office. Starting July 10th, you'll be able to tune into the NBC website to view the latest adventures of the characters that normally don't have top billing during the normal seasons. And yet, they are just as funny (sometimes funnier) than the big stars that grace the show week after week.
As we reported back in May, this set of webisodes will feature Darryl, Oscar and, most prominently, Kevin. The plot of these webisodes are a bit fuzzy from the previews, but it seems that Kevin is in a bit of financial trouble and needs to take a loan out in order to cover some losses. During this time he is taken under the wing of Darryl, who helps Kevin reach his goals. All that, and we get to see Darryl wear a suit.
There are two videos after the jump. The first features scenes from the upcoming webisodes. The second is a behind the scenes look at the episodes by stars Oscar Nunez (Oscar), Craig Robinson (Darryl) and Brian Baumgartner (Kevin). It's here that we learn that Brian has filmed the webisodes sans pants. Something that us fans probably didn't want to know about.
90210 alum makes deal with MySpace
And 90210 makes the news again this week! But I don't mind because I can never get enough Bevelry Hills, 90210 (or Bev as I affectionately call it). Ian Ziering will be developing webisodes with social-networking titan MySpace. These web shorts will be based on Man Vs. Monday, a film Ziering directed, produced and even starred in two years ago. The webisodes will be about an office slacker who has trouble getting through his Mondays after his crazy weekends. Why the choice to develop the shows with MySpace? "In the entertainment industry there remains one constant: change. I believe the digital world presents tremendous opportunities for the producers who understand it, and I am launching a digital production company, iMan Productions, to take advantage of this opportunity," Ziering told a press conference. Is he on to something here?
Ziering will also star opposite Heather Graham and Jerry O'Connell in the comedy Baby on Board to be released later this year.
NBC announces webisodes of Office and Heroes
NBC announced today that webisodes for The Office and Heroes would officially premiere on NBC.com starting in July. Seems like all that chit-chat that led to the WGA Strike cease-fire is finally showing some results.
The Office webisodes will premiere first in early July and will focus on Kevin's gambling issues and how he plans to pay for his debts. We got a taste of his competitive side in this past week's episode when he started betting on holes at the golf course. The summer series will also feature Stanley, Oscar, and Darryl. This is the second series of webisodes for The Office, which premiered The Accountants back in the summer of 2006.
In 15 years, we'll all be watching TV online (and wearing jet packs!)
NBC boss Ben Silverman tells TV Week that in 15 years, we won't really be using TV for anything except launching a show and to watch big "event" shows like American Idol and The Super Bowl.
I have to agree with one of the commenters at TV Week who says that if NBC wants us to go online to see the final scene of a TV show, then we're going to change the channel and watch something else. I don't want to have to work to get my entertainment. It's television; I want to sit in front of it with a cold drink and maybe some Doritos and watch something from start to finish. What's next, movies that end with a giant "GO TO IRONMANMOVIE.MARVEL.COM TO SEE THE EXCITING ENDING TO THIS FILM!"? Or maybe we can purchase a DVD of the ending as we head out the theater door?
I think that Silverman is right when he says that TV networks and shows will have to have some sort of online companion if they want to stick around. But that's nothing new, the networks and most TV shows already have all that. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Personally, I think that in 15 years we're still going to have our TV sets in our living rooms, though the computer/TV merge will be a lot better and in every home.
Jack Bauer heads to Africa
To tie us over until 24's seventh season premieres in January 2009 (it's closer than we think), Fox is appeasing us with The Rookie, five-minute webisodes following the adventures of American Counter Terrorism agent Jason Blaine, played by Jeremy Valdez. Check out Keith's post about The Rookie here. It all ties in with the TV series. Blaine was first seen in 24's fifth season aboard a Russian sub. "If Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne had a love child, it would be Jason Blaine," says co-writer Kevin Townsend in an Associated Press story. "He's a younger, more ambitious, less experienced -- but no less talented -- version of those two characters."
Ok, that's kind of a creepy way to put it, but we get it. Now in its third phase, titled Day 3 - Extraction, the web series finds Blaine sent to Mexico City to rescue his mentor, Alton Maxwell (Eric Beck), who's been kidnapped by drug czar, Estaban Salazar. Remember him? The Salazar brothers were introduced to us in 24's third season.
24's The Rookie 2.0: Day Three, The Extraction (episode five) - VIDEO
We've got a long wait ahead of us until the seventh season of 24 (holy crap, it's been six seasons already?) hits the network -- January 2009, to be exact. Until then we have the reported two-hour prequel movie coming sometime this year. And until then, we have further webisodes of The Rookie. From the official description:"The Rookie: Day 3 Extraction digital shorts chronicle the further adventures of American Counter Terrorism agent, Jason Blaine. Set within the same high-stakes world as 24, Blaine races against the clock to try rescue his boss, who is kidnapped by a nefarious drug cartel. This year's digital shorts will be released in six chapters, with each lasting three to four minutes."
Below we have the exclusive on the new episode, before it appears on the official site next week.
Lost webisodes agreement template for strike talks?
The New York Times says the producers of the Lost webisodes may be on to something. One of the sticking points from the writer's side is that studios and producers aren't paying the writers for use of their scripts on the Internet. But the deal struck with ABC Studios for the Lost webisodes does just that, providing fair compensation for usage of their scripts.
As a counter to this, the webisodes produced for The Office this past summer offered no residuals to the writers for their continual play. Both sides agree the Lost terms are along the lines of what they are looking for, but the WGA (Writer's Guild of America) is seeking a higher percentage than the Lost writers got. Hopefully examining this successful deal can help both sides quickly come to an overall deal for the industry so I can be sure and get the full season of Lost I was promised this year.
Farscape to become Web series, along with webisodes of Battlestar Galactica
Some cool news for fans of Farscape: the series is coming back in the form of ten new webisodes. As of this moment no actors and writers have been attached to the project, nor have any storylines been announced. According to the Post Gazette, if the Web series is successful enough, the series could return to television. I'd say that's quite a long shot (the series went off the air in 2003), but I certainly wouldn't complain if it came back. I was late getting into Farscape, but I thought it was fun and imaginative.
Leah Remini to star in motherhood webisodes
Actress Leah Remini is moving to the internet for her next gig, now that The King of Queens is over. She'll star in a series of webisodes called In the Motherhood. It's an interesting premise, really. The episodes will be based on, or at least incorporate, consumer-generated stories about being a mom. It's all on this website, which is being promoted heavily on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. There's a video on the website where Remini asks moms to write in about their funny stories and then vote on the other stories that were submitted. The favorites will be written into episodes of In the Motherhood.Right now, there are five episodes planned for a ten-week stretch starting on May 11.
Writers Guild wins webisode dispute with NBCU
Last summer, I told you about a dispute NBC Universal was having with the Writers Guild of America over the webisodes they asked the creators of The Office, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica to write and produce prior to this season. It seems as if the WGA was a little cheesed off that NBC was asking writers to create these web-only vignettes for no extra compensation, and ordered the writers to stop working on them. NBCU filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board over the union's order.Well, the NLRB finally ruled on the matter, and NBCU came out on the losing end. Sort of. The board dismissed the case yesterday, ruling that there was no evidence that the union coerced or pressured the show-runners of those shows to not work on the webisodes. So, while NBCU technically lost, all they wanted from this case was for the WGA to admit that they didn't pressure anyone, which is what they got, according to Broadcasting & Cable. Another dispute between the two parties, about a "side-letter" agreement regarding web content, will be decided by a private arbitrator in late spring.
12 Oz Mouse is coming back
First it was Perfect Hair Forever and The Brak Show, and now Adult Swim is also bringing back 12 Oz Mouse with exclusive Web-only episodes, according to this interview with creator Matt Maiellaro. The new episodes are set to begin production next month. Maiellaro also mentioned a future DVD release, so there's plenty for 12 Oz Mouse fans to be thrilled about.
From the very beginning with shows like Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Adult Swim has provided folks like myself with the kind of goofy surrealist comedy we crave. What's particularly intriguing about 12 Oz Mouse is that it manages to be a weird show even in contrast to the weird shows that surround it. It doesn't provide the eleven-minute comedy pummeling of other Williams Street fare, but instead unravels slowly, revealing a little bit more of what's underneath the surface while also piling on more and more questions. It is the most simplistically drawn of all the Adult Swim shows, and yet the most complex in terms of story. It's that paradox that kept me engrossed in the series right up to the last televised episode.
