Even a Collision With the Yushin Maru Can't Slow Down the 'Whale Wars' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 1st 2011 1:38AM
'Whale Wars'While it may not be the elusive and slipper Nisshin Maru, the Yushin Maru will simply have to do. It's still a big get for the Sea Shepherd. After all, their 'Whale Wars' (Fri., 9PM ET on Animal Planet) is to cripple the business of whale killing by Japanese ships, and the Yushin Maru is an important cog in the machine.

To attach a prop fouler, which is supposed to jam up the propellors of the ship, they must get very close to the prow of the vessel they're trying to jam. In this case, their much smaller boat got a little bit too close and took a solid hit.

Luckily for all onboard, no one was hurt and they can just chalk up the jarring moment as another memorable experience on their quest. Even more importantly, they were able to get close enough to disable the ship, at least temporarily. It may not be "the white whale," but it still must be pretty satisfying.

'Whale Wars' Spin-off Coming to Animal Planet

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 25th 2011 2:50PM
Whale WarsWhile the team on 'Whale Wars' completed their mission to convince Japan to suspend its controversial whaling operations, their work is still not done.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Captain Paul Watson and Peter Hammerstedt will star in a new spin-off tentatively titled 'The Faroe Islands Project.'

In the new series, the Sea Shepherds head to the Faroe Islands, halfway between the UK and Iceland. There, they will launch a land, sea and air campaign in an effort to stop "The Grind," an annual hunt for pilot whales that kills about 1,000 whales per year.

The Elusive Factory Ship Nisshin Maru Is Found on 'Whale Wars' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 25th 2011 1:02AM
Nisshin Maru, 'Whale Wars'The Nisshin Maru, to use a very awkward analogy, is like Captain Ahab's White Whale to the crews of 'Whale Wars' (Fri., 9PM ET on Animal Planet). This factory ship is the central hub in much of the Japanese whale slaughter operation, so taking it out would effectively cripple the whole system.

So it was with an understandable glee that, after nearly two full months of searching, the helicopter crew spotted it. "Knowing they're just right there over the horizon is obviously the most exciting part of the whole campaign," said pilot Chris Aultman.

Unfortunately, finding the elusive vessel proved to only be the first step in taking it out of commission, and the men and women of 'Whale Wars' didn't take it out this time around. The Nisshin Maru escaped their grasp, but what they found once they can surely find again. Ahab never gave up, after all.

marriage refAnd just when you thought we were done talking about Charlie Sheen ... The former 'Two and a Half Men' star was the talk of the show, for a minute anyway, on the latest episode of 'The Marriage Ref' (Sundays, 10PM on NBC).

Without actually speaking his name, The Ma-Sheen's ex-wife, Denise Richards, revealed a little about Sheen's controlling ways while comparing their marriage to the show's latest cross couple.

A Plan to Stop Pursuit Backfires, Leaving the Crew Adrift on 'Whale Wars' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 27th 2011 2:49AM
'Whale Wars'The campaign against Japanese whaling ships continued on 'Whale Wars' (Fri., 9PM ET on Animal Planet), but took a dangerous turn when the crew of the Bob Barker attempts to disable a pursuing harpoon boat. The plan was to get a rope caught in the Japanese boat's propellers, thus allowing the Bob Barker to get clear.

This plan didn't work out so well, though, as the rope not only gets nice and caught in the propeller, but remains attached to their boat. After many frantic attempts to cut the line, they finally managed to free themselves, but not before doing enough damage to their ship to disable it.

So after all that excitement, it became a waiting game as the crew tried to stave of hypothermia while awaiting rescue. No one was injured and the boat wasn't seriously damanged, though, so it certainly could have been much worse.

Unforgiving Ship Injures Chief Engineer on 'Whale Wars' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 6th 2011 1:00AM
Campbell Holland, 'Whale Wars'Chief Engineer Campbell Holland said it pretty well on 'Whale Wars' (Fri., 9PM ET on Animal Planet) when he described the ship by saying, "Everything's steel around here, so it's pretty unforgiving on you ."

Holland found this out first-hand when he was inspecting a fuel leak. While he was up in a corner inspecting the situation, the ship hit a swell and he found his skull knocked against a jagged edge of steel.

While it looked worse than it was, the blood streaming down the side of his head was a solid reminder that you have to be vigilant at all times when working in an environment like this. Especially with the seas rocking the ship constantly, it's essential to know where your body is and where the components of the ship are in proximity to you.

DVR Divas: Fighting 'Whale Wars' on the High Seas

by Kelly Woo, posted Jun 4th 2010 5:50PM
Whale WarsWhile you were chowing down on turkey on Thanksgiving Day or toasting with champagne this past New Year's Eve, Captain Chuck Swift and Peter Hammerstedt were chasing down whaling ships in frigid Antarctic waters.

They're part of a group called the Sea Shepherds, a marine conservation society, and their battles against whalers are documented on Animal Planet's hit series, 'Whale Wars.'

Season 3 begins tonight at 9PM ET, and Swift and Hammerstedt stopped by our studio to chat with myself and fellow TV Squad editor Patricia Chui about what to expect (lots more danger), the operation's new ship (named for a generous game show host) and how they got involved with Sea Shepherds.

'Whale Wars' Boat, the Ady Gil, Apparently Sunk by Japanese Vessel

by Daniel Frankel, posted Jan 6th 2010 12:50PM
If Wednesday's near-fatal clash between Japanese whalers and activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is any indicator, the upcoming third season of Animal Planet's 'Whale Wars' is going to be a doozy.

Six members of Sea Shepherd, the organization featured regularly on the Animal Planet show, were rescued in the Antarctic after their boat, the Ady Gil, was rammed and severely damaged by a Japanese whaling vessel.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 28th 2009 6:07PM
GleeHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

So this week we have Glee, which is releasing Volume 1 of their first season before the first season is even over. Most shows don't do this, but FOX feels they can capitalize on the popularity of the show and the popularity of the soundtrack. FlashForward is doing the same thing before the rest of their season launches in January, though I don't think that they will have the same success as Glee.

And to answer your question, no, I'm not sure what Emily of New Moon is either. Here's the IMDb page for it. It has nothing to do with Twilight.

  • Emily of New Moon - Season 2
  • Glee - Season 1, Vol. 1
  • Spaceballs - Totally Warped-Up Adventures
  • Time Warp - Season 2
  • The United States of Tara - Season 1
  • The Waltons - Season 1 and 2 set
  • Whale Wars - Season 2

Is South Park too focused on reality TV?

by Danny Gallagher, posted Nov 4th 2009 7:29PM

Even though the show has been on forever, I still enjoy my weekly dose of the new South Parks. But lately, they seem to be running out of targets or have narrowed their focus too much on one particular evil: reality television.

The season opener featured a rather nasty swipe at Disney's Jonas Brothers. The recent "Dead Celebrities" chortle-fest took a much needed pot shot at Ghost Hunters, aka, "the gayest f#*$ing show on television." And last week launched an all out attack on Discovery's Whale Wars and Deadliest Catch, particularly against Whale Wars star Paul Watson.

The show has always been a bitch to write and making every episode a satirical masterpiece is impossible without suffering a full-on breakdown. But should the show lay off reality TV and take some bolder shots at reality, which as we all know are two completely different things?
