'Wipeout': Vanessa Lachey Debuts as New Co-Host (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 9th 2011 12:45AM
Vanessa Lachey, 'Winter Wipeout: Deck the Balls'ABC brought us a special holiday edition with 'Winter Wipeout: Deck the Balls' (Thu., 8PM ET on ABC). But it was more than just a teaser for the new season, kicking off in January. It was an opportunity to introduce the new face on the team. The presenter in the field with the contestants is Vanessa Lachey, replacing Jill Wagner, who had served in that role since the first episode.

John Anderson introduced her as a present for co-host John Henson, while Lachey wasted no time getting her digs in. "I'm a huge fan of both of you," she said. "Anderson, I love your work on ESPN. And Henson, your dad invented the Muppets, right?"

She brought a lot of the same quirky personality that made her a fan-favorite on 'TRL' on MTV, like joining a contestant in becoming a human kazoo.

With Moves Like That, It's No Surprise This 'Circus Freak' Didn't 'Wipeout' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 1st 2011 1:14AM
Sarah Cooper AKA Circus Freak, 'Wipeout'It takes a 'Circus Freak' to handle the obstacles on the 'Wipeout' (Thu., 8PM ET on ABC) course. At least, that's what Sarah Cooper proved this week as she made her way through the various stages with impressive strength, balance and agility.

John Henson was flabbergasted by one move that saw her hanging onto a rotating "dangler" by her feet, getting battered and beaten as it moved her from one platform to the next. The girl has some strong legs, that's for sure.

"She just blew my freaking mind," Henson said. "It's like the Cirque du Soleil and Ringling Brothers had a freakish little baby."

For her accomplishments, Cooper walked away with a hefty $50,000 prize. We're sure she thinks it well worth any bruises she might have gotten on the course.

Set Visit: Behind the Scenes of 'Wipeout Canada'

by Chris Jancelewicz, posted Mar 29th 2011 6:00PM

We start our adventure deep within the farm country surrounding Buenos Aires, Argentina. In a place where you'd expect to find wild animals or giant clusters of horses running freely, we instead find towering obstacles, spinning wheels, and the occasional yell/scream of a contestant. Yep, 45 minutes into the Argentinian countryside from Buenos Aires, we stumble upon the set of 'Wipeout Canada.'

The sun is hot already (and it's only 10AM) and the 'Wipeout' crew is buzzing around the set. They aim their giant hoses at the Big Red Balls to "wet" them down (i.e. -- make them more slippery), and ensure all the ring towers are stacked properly. Larger than life and not unlike a carnival, the course props spin and whir, and the Punch-Out Wall starts shooting out the feared fists.

Unfortunately, media isn't allowed on the course, but we get as close as possible without being actual contestants. We also glean some tips and tricks from cast and crew about how to compete on 'Wipeout,' without getting any -- well -- mud on your face. From avoiding local wildlife to what to expect from this upcoming premiere season, here are the top 10 things you need to know about 'Wipeout Canada.'

What Will the Logjam at 8PM on Thursday Mean for Your Favorite Show?

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 27th 2011 1:00PM
The Season 10 cast of 'American Idol'
At least once or twice every year, there's a time slot with such a logjam of good shows that bloggers and fans wail and rend their garments, tortured by the prospect of picking two shows to watch and record out of three or more that air during simultaneously. "Why do networks put all the good shows against each other?" we cry.

With online options -- legal and otherwise -- readily available, this isn't as big a problem as it used to be. Still, it's annoying to have to plan out your watching to such a degree.

Mondays at 8PM have been a problem for some time, with 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'House,' 'Chuck' and 'Dancing With the Stars' making life difficult for the average TV viewer. Now, Thursdays at 8PM are becoming just as difficult: 'American Idol' has been thrown into the fray, competing with 'The Big Bang Theory,' 'Community' and (don't laugh) 'Wipeout.'

But even with the presence of the fading but still dominant 'Idol' in the mix, it seems like this battle won't be as bloody as the one on Mondays, and for a very good reason: People aren't going to tune out their favorite Thursday show in favor of something else.

The Best Wipeouts on the Special Winter Premiere of 'Wipeout' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jan 7th 2011 1:05AM
'Wipeout''Wipeout' (Thu., 8PM on ABC) returned for a special winter season run, and had seasonal and holiday-themed obstacles to commemorate it. They also offered viewers a whole bevy of new ways to watch contestants get smacked around, beat up and, of course, thrown into the water.

After all, it is called 'Wipeout,' and that is why we're tuning in. It's always funny to watch contestants get whacked or knocked out at the same obstacle each time, as if they're forgetting what did them in. Maybe it's all those blows to the head leaving them a little groggy and confused.

It may not be as challenging to master as 'Dancing with the Stars,' doesn't require talent coming into it like 'Live to Dance,' but 'Wipeout' is easily the most mindlessly entertaining of the bunch. And, looking at some of these challenges, quite possibly harder than most other reality competition shows to win.

It's definitely the messiest of the network fare. Is that why we love it so?

Self-Styled 'Force of Nature' Dominates the 'Wipeout' Course (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 3rd 2010 11:10PM
Frank Beasley is a red-headed force of nature. Or, he's a "freak of nature," according to the hosts of 'Wipeout' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC). Frank is also one of the current contestants on the game show, and he pretty much just rocks out -- starting with a crazy fist-pump when he's at the starting line.

Long-haired Frank then goes on to dominate the course. He avoids such challenges as giant condoms popping out of doors (or at least, that's what it looks like -- we're not really sure), and being punched in the face with boxing gloves. And in the end ...

[Spoiler alert.]

... Frank wins the show! Congrats. He makes this statement upon winning the $50,000 prize: "GHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH." Excellent! And well put, Frank!
