A universal remote that can control everything, maybe even the universe
by Danny Gallagher, posted Aug 23rd 2009 9:02AM
Every TV addict has that moment when they throw themselves on the couch and muster enough courage to overcome their body fat, gravity and the risk of doing a full sit-up to reach for the remote. But then comes that feeling of sheer dread when your hand, reaching as far as your arm will allow, grabs nothing but air. Your eyes dart around the room, first scanning the immediate area that doesn't require you to get up from the contoured indent left by your ever-expanding ass. Finally, you find it ... clear across the room. You have discovered the remote control's one and only modern flaw.
Don't fret. Scientists across the globe have been putting their swine flu vaccine and obesity epidemic research projects aside and working on improving TV remote technology. That idea for a miracle virus cure never materialized but, thankfully, they've perfected the remote control.
PBS picks up Wired Science
by Anna Johns, posted May 2nd 2007 10:20AM
The producers of Wired Science were kind enough to drop us a note that they have been picked up by PBS for the fall season. Wired Science was part of a grand PBS experiment to have viewers vote on their favorite pilots and PBS would take those votes into consideration when choosing which one to pick up. Wired Science was the far-and-away favorite among voters and focus groups (and my mom) out of the three pilots that PBS offered up for viewing. The Wired Science pilot featured meteorite hunters, virus harvesting in Yellowstone Nat'l Park, and NASA's underwater astronaut training program. Cool stuff. (You can still check out the pilot here)The series is connected to Wired Magazine and is described as "a weekly one-hour series that presents the crucial subjects of science and technology in a smart and compelling format." When it launches in the fall, Wired Science will (naturally) have a significant online presence that includes video and additional resources. The 10-week series premieres October 3rd at 8 pm.
Wired Science debuts tonight on PBS
by Adam Finley, posted Jan 3rd 2007 3:01PM
Wired Magazine's new series for PBS, Wired Science, debuts this evening at 8pm. Alternatively, you can watch the entire pilot episode by clicking here. Just don't confuse the show with the '80s flick Weird Science. As far as I know, Oingo Boingo didn't compose any music for this new series. David Byrne of the Talking Heads, however, did compose the theme music, which is much cooler (no offense to Danny Elfman).
