'Queer As Folk' Cast: Where Are They Now?

by Kim Potts, posted Dec 3rd 2010 1:00PM
Queer As FolkThe groundbreaking American version of 'Queer as Folk' ran for five seasons (the U.K. original aired for 10 episodes), and, with Dec. 3 marking 'Queer as Folk's' 10th anniversary, we're taking the opportunity to check in with what the show's stars have been up to since 'Queer As Folk' wrapped in 2005.

The British original -- created by 'Doctor Who' revival creator Russell T. Davies -- starred future 'Undeclared' and 'Sons of Anarchy' star Charlie Hunnam and 'The Wire' scene stealer Aidan Gillen and debuted in 1999.

And the American remake, starring Gale Harold, Hal Sparks, newbie Randy Harrison and Emmy-winning TV vet Sharon Gless -- followed the next year, and made a splash on Showtime with its randy, funny tales (and very graphic sex scenes) about the loves and lives of a group of gay Pittsburgh pals.

Gale HaroldGale Harold
Brian Kinney

Super sexy ad exec Brian was concerned with himself, his BFF Michael and sleeping with as many people as possible until he met, and eventually fell in love with, the younger Justin, even though the two didn't end up together in the series finale. Harold, whose first major role was 'Queer as Folk' (he didn't start acting until he was 28), followed up the series with memorable guest appearances on 'The Unit,' 'Deadwood' (playing Wyatt Earp) and 'Grey' Anatomy' (where he played a white supremacist paramedic), and the lead role in the short-lived Fox drama 'Vanished,' where his character was killed off before the series ended. He also played Teri Hatcher's love interest on 'Desperate Housewives,' until a serious motorcycle accident derailed what was scheduled to be a more pivotal role, and currently, he plays law professor Julian Parrish on The CW series 'Hellcats.'

Randy HarrisonRandy Harrison
Justin Taylor

Sweet Justin -- Michael's mom calls him "Sunshine" for his ever-present smile and cheery outlook -- slept with and fell in love with Brian during Justin's senior year of high school, and their on-again, off-again relationship, as well as the very talented Justin's art pursuits, marked most of his time on the show. Post-'QAF,' which was his first TV role, Harrison starred in the made-for-TV movie adaptation of the play 'Bang Bang You're Dead,' about school bullying, and has been very active in New York theater, including playing Boq in 'Wicked.' He also appeared earlier this year at a 'Queer As Folk'/'The L Word' convention in Paris.

Hal SparksHal Sparks
Michael Novotny

Brian's BFF since they were kids, Michael also not-so-secretly is in love with Brian, who values their friendship too much to date Michael. Michael, a retail manager who eventually realizes his dream of opening his own comic book shop, also eventually collaborates on a comic with Justin, and marries boyfriend Ben, with whom he adopts teenage Hunter. Sparks, a comedian who was best known as the post-Greg Kinnear and John Henson host of E!'s 'Talk Soup' before 'Queer as Folk,' followed his dramatic role with several reality TV appearances. He hosted The WB kids game show 'Survival of the Richest,' was a contestant himself on 'Celebrity Duets' and 'Celebracadabra,' and played himself in the video for Fall Out Boy's cover of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It.' He also starred in a Showtime stand up special, 'Hal Sparks: Charmageddon,' earlier this year, is a member of the rock band Zero1 and interacts with fans via Twitter and his official Website.

Sharon GlessSharon Gless
Debbie Novotny

Debbie was Michael's very supportive, PFLAG-member mom, who was known for her colorful t-shirts, jewelry and buttons, which she proudly wore while working as a diner waitress. Debbie was a mom figure for all of Michael's friends, especially Justin and Brian, and eventually fell in love and started living with police detective Carl. Post-'QAF,' the Emmy-winning 'Cagney & Lacey' star has earned Emmy nominations with two more TV roles: crazy agent Colleen on 'Nip/Tuck' and as another supportive mama, this time that of spy guy Michael Westen, on 'Burn Notice.'

Peter PaigePeter Paige
Emmett Honeycutt

Emmett was the gang's most flamboyant friend, a sweet guy who held many jobs (clothing store, catering business and porn star among them) and embarked on a relationship with his BFF, Ted; a much-older rich guy who died before they could leave on a long trip together; and Drew, a pro quarterback who outs himself by kissing Emmett in public. Since 'Queer As Folk,' Paige has guest starred on 'Without a Trace,' 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'CSI: Miami,' stars as Steve in the Logo animated sitcom 'Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World' and had recurring roles on 'Related' and 'American Dad!' He's also directing the upcoming big-screen movie 'Sex Crime Panic,' about men in the 1950s who were admitted to a mental institution because they were gay.

Scott LowellScott Lowell
Ted Schmidt

Cynical, self-doubting Ted was a smart, successful accountant who fell in love with a young drug addict named Blake, and eventually became an addict himself. He also dated BFF Emmett, launched his own porn business (for which Emmett performed), became the CFO for the ad agency, Kinnetik, that Brian started and was, in the end, reunited with Blake. Since 'QAF,' Lowell has guest starred on 'Criminal Minds,' 'Heroes,' 'Leverage' and 'American Dad!' He also stars in the upcoming big-screen flick 'The Chicago 8,' about the protestors who were arrested at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Fans can follow him on Twitter or at his official Website.

Thea GillThea Gill
Lindsay Peterson

Art gallery curator Lindsay was one of Brian's closest friends since college, and the mother, via artificial insemination, of his son Gus. She was also in a relationship with Melanie, who gave birth to another child, Jenny, thanks to a sperm donation from Michael. Since 'Queer as Folk' ended, Gill has starred in the here! network's supernatural soap opera 'Dante's Cove,' guest starred on 'Ghost Whisperer' and co-starred with 'Burn Notice's' Gabrielle Anwar in the TV movie 'Lies Between Friends.' She's also a talented jazz singer, and is reuniting with her 'QAF' co-stars in two upcoming movies: 'Copacabana,' with Peter Paige (and 'American Idol' finalist Jim Verraros) and 'Slip Away,' with Hal Sparks.

Michelle ClunieMichelle Clunie
Melanie Marcus

Lawyer Melanie was Lindsay's lover who, in the early seasons of the show, wasn't so fond of Brian, or Lindsay's friendship with him. Eventually, she warmed up to him a bit, though she and Lindsay left Pittsburgh to start over in Toronto in the final season. Post-'QAF,' she's continued to be a regular presence on TV, with guest roles in 'Lie to Me,' 'The Mentalist,' 'CSI,' 'House,' 'The Closer' and 'Without a Trace,' as well as a recurring role as Ellen Beals on ABC Family's gymnastics drama 'Make It or Break It.'

Robert GantRobert Gant
Ben Bruckner

College professor Ben met Michael when he was the first customer at Michael's comic book store. They began dating, and then briefly broke up when Michael learned Ben was HIV-positive, but they reunite and eventually get married in Canada. As for Gant, a lawyer who began pursuing acting in Los Angeles after the law firm he worked for shut down, he's continued to be a regular presence on TV, including guest roles on 'CSI,' 'CSI: NY' and 'CSI: Miami,' as well as 'Bones,' 'Castle,' 'Hot in Cleveland' and '90210,' and has been recognized for his civil rights efforts, including working with organizations that revolve around aging members of the gay community.

Jack WetherallJack Wetherall
Vic Grassi

Uncle Vic was Michael's HIV-positive uncle, who was nursed back to health by Debbie after he nearly died. He worked with Debbie at the Liberty Diner, and lived with her, until he met a man and moved in with him. Vic died from a heart attack caused by his HIV medications in season three, but started to show up in Brian's dreams when Brian was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Post-'Queer as Folk,' Canadian actor Wetherall has focused on his theater career, including a summer 2010 role opposite Tony nominee Dana Ivey in Samuel Beckett's 'Happy Days' at the Westport Playhouse in Connecticut.

Dean ArmstrongDean Armstrong
Blake Wyzecki

Ted was in love with addict Blake, and tried to help him get clean, even helping him get a job that he would lose because of drugs. When Ted himself later went to rehab, he met up once again with Blake, who was now a drug counselor. The two tried, and failed, a dating relationship again, but in the series finale, they met up one more time and reunited. Armstrong, meanwhile, is not only an actor, but also one of Canada's most respected acting coaches, whose clients have included Miley Cyrus, 'Degrassi' and 'The Vampire Diaries' star Nina Dobrev and 'Degrassi' stars John Bregar, Shane Kippel and Miriam McDonald.

I love these people. Good decisions, bad decisions and anything in between. First caught the series way back when. Catching up on all the series on demand. On season 3 right now, will feel sad when it's completed but loving it, each and every episode!

I am watching this all over from start to finish on Netflix. The show still works, the story lines are all real and happening still. This show was way ahead of its time. Loving every minute of watching it again. Wish it was still going. Would love to see a 2 part movie/reunion with where the whole gang is now in theirs lives.
